Shanghai Ranking: if to study dentistry, w…
Among the top universities training future dentists, the majority are dental schools from the United States. This is according to this year’s edition of the so-called. Shanghai Ranking – Academic Ranking of World Universities.
For those who intend to study dentistry not necessarily in their own city or country, this ranking provides a hint as to where the level of education will provide solid preparation for the dental profession. Also for representatives of dental clinic chains, the ranking can be an indication, hiring graduates of which universities will be a good investment.
What is the Shanghai Ranking?
The Shanghai Ranking is created each year based on a survey of some 1,500 department heads, heads of faculties and deans of the top 100 universities representing a particular scientific field – in this case dentistry. Questions concern m.In. conducted research that has made a significant contribution to the development of dentistry, awards received for outstanding achievements and publications in the most prestigious professional journals.
The name of the ranking has to do with the place where it is developed – it is created at the Institute of Higher Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The list of the world’s best universities has been compiled since 2003.
United States top
The leading positions in 2022, as in previous years, are occupied by US universities. This year’s top ten included as many as eight of them: University of Michigan-Ann Arbor School of Dentistry (ranked No. 1.), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2) Harvard University (4), the School of Dentistry at the University of California at San Francisco (5), the School of Dentistry at the University of California at Los Angeles (6), the School of Dentistry at the University of Washington in Seattle (7), Penn Dental Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (8) and the University at Buffalo (9).
Rounding out the top ten are: Adams School of Dentistry King’s College London (position 3.) and the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil (ranked 10.).
More European universities were included in the second ten of the ranking: University College London (11), the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium (12), and the universities of Zurich (13), Bern (16), Amsterdam (18) and Birmingham (19). In the second ten – in 14th place – was ranked the first dental school from Asia: the University of Hong Kong.
Central Europe far or off the list
In the group of the world’s best universities educating dentists there was only one representative of Poland: the Jagiellonian University. The position obtained by the Medical College – between 201. a 300. place – leaves unsatisfied, although in previous years the ranking did not include any university from our country. This year’s Top 300 also does not include medical universities from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus or Russia.
The Medical University of Kaunas (Lithuania) was ranked in the same group as UJ, and Semmelweis University in Budapest was ranked higher (places 151-200). Among our neighbors, only German universities are represented in large numbers (a total of 30 out of 300 classified dental schools). The highest – in a group between 51. a 75. place – found the University of Bonn and three Berlin universities: the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität.
– Classes that can be conducted remotely are organized in this way. On the other hand, the teaching of dentistry requires practical classes, and we organize such, too – says in an interview with Dentonet prof. dr hab. n. med. Dorota Olczak-Kowalczyk, dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the Medical University of Warsaw.
